Give Concepción 2 nights as a base for the Biobío coast, or skip it if your trip is Santiago–Atacama–Patagonia: it is a working city, not a sight.
Concepción is Chile's second city and the main urban centre of the Biobío region, 5 hours by bus from Santiago. It is a university city with a strong student nightlife, a riverside park and easy access to the coast at Talcahuano, Lenga and Dichato. Sights are modest and spread out; most travellers use it as a stop between Santiago and the south, or as a base for the coast and Chillán.
