Everything the tour says, in order. Read it instead of listening if you prefer.

  1. Before you start

Welcome to the Kaloum centre & Sandervalia audio walk in Conakry. 3 stops: National Museum of Guinea, Sainte-Marie Cathedral and Marché du Niger. Morning cluster: the national museum and the old centre at the tip of the peninsula; go before 10:30 and take a car between stops.

Central Kaloum and the Sandervalia quarter (approximate box; the peninsula is narrow here). Underfoot: pavement, broken in places; slope: flat; shade: low.

Conakry is a capital built on a single road. It sits at the end of a long peninsula on the Atlantic, where a port, a market economy and a great deal of rain meet, and where a 12 km trip can take two hours.

Before you start: Do not photograph government buildings or soldiers. Keep your eyes on the street, and pause the audio before you cross a road.

  2. 1. National Museum of Guinea

    Musée National de Sandervalia

Stop 1 of 3: National Museum of Guinea. Locally, Musée National de Sandervalia.

A masks-and-instruments museum stop on the Kaloum morning; check that it is open before you go, as hours are not printed.

Quiet on weekday mornings. Shoes on.

Walk:Next, stop 2: Sainte-Marie Cathedral. This leg is usually a ride, not a walk: short car ride, about 6 minutes. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.

  3. 2. Sainte-Marie Cathedral

    Cathédrale Sainte-Marie

    Stop 2 of 3: Sainte-Marie Cathedral. Locally, Cathédrale Sainte-Marie.

A short exterior-and-interior stop in central Kaloum on the museum morning: go early or at a service, dress modestly, and ask before you take any photo.

The Sainte-Marie Cathedral is a short stop, and the Marché du Niger is a smaller, more manageable market than Madina.

Do not photograph government buildings, soldiers or police around the forecourt. Quiet on weekday mornings; full on Sundays and feast days. Shoulders and knees covered; no hats inside. Central Kaloum is compact but the pavements are broken and shade is thin: take a car between stops. Entry is normally free; a small donation is customary if you go in (2026 estimate: a small note, check). There is no cloakroom: leave the big bag at the hotel. Ask before photographing people or a service in progress. Ask the hotel whether the cathedral is open to visitors that day and whether a service is on.

Walk:Next, stop 3: Marché du Niger. This leg is usually a ride, not a walk: short car ride, about 5 minutes. The next stop is about 250 metres to the east. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.

  4. 3. Marché du Niger

Stop 3 of 3: Marché du Niger.

A smaller, more manageable market in central Kaloum than Madina: go before 10:00 with a driver waiting and cash for small purchases.

Pickpocketing and phone snatching happen in crowds and slow traffic: carry only what you will spend. Busy from 08:00; crowded and hot by 10:30. Ask first; some traders refuse and that is final. It is a working market: the goods are fabric, produce, household items and food, not a souvenir mall. Nothing has a price tag: agree the price first and pay in small notes. Bring bottled water and a hat; shade is thin. Ask before photographing people or stalls. Arrive by 08:00 by car and ask the driver to wait at the edge of the market. Carry small GNF notes in a front pocket; leave the passport, bag and second phone at the hotel. Marché du Niger or Madina? Niger is smaller and closer to a Kaloum hotel, so it is the easier first market; Madina is far bigger and harder work.

  5. End of the walk

That's the end of the Kaloum centre & Sandervalia walk. To carry on, Boulbinet port is about 15 minutes away (car south). To carry on, Camayenne & the Corniche is about 40 minutes away (car north-east (traffic)).
