Los Angeles vs San Francisco: which should you visit?

San Francisco is the easier first city: 3 nights covers the bay, the hills, Alcatraz and a day trip, and you can do it on foot, cable car and metro without a car. Los Angeles is bigger, flatter and spread out, so it rewards 3–4 nights and a rental car — beaches, studios, museums and neighbourhood food, with heavy traffic between them.

If you have one week in California and want both, give San Francisco 3 nights and Los Angeles 3, and move between them by short flight rather than driving, which eats most of a day. If you have only 2 nights, do not split them.

Both are expensive by US standards, and both add sales tax at checkout plus a hotel tax. Figures below are 2026 estimates for one person, mid-range travel.

Choose Los Angeles if you want beaches and warm weather, film and studio sights, and a car-based trip where you cover ground. It suits families with children, travellers with 3–4 nights, and anyone continuing to Las Vegas, the desert or a national-park loop.

It is the weaker choice if you have 2 nights, no car, or no interest in driving. Traffic is the main cost in time: plan two areas a day, not five.

Choose San Francisco if you have 2–3 nights, want to walk, and prefer cool weather and compact sightseeing. It is the better first stop for a short trip, and the natural base for Napa Valley, Marin County and Yosemite.

Skip it if you expect California sunshine in summer: June to August is often foggy and 15–18 °C. Bring a jacket.

The two cities are about 560 km apart: 6–7 hours by car on Interstate 5, or a flight of roughly 1h20m. A one-way rental car lets you drive the coast via Monterey County and the Central Coast in 2–3 days, which is the best version of the trip if you have the time.

With a week, fly one way and spend the saved day in the city you prefer. With 4–5 nights total, choose one city and add a day trip instead of splitting.

Driving between the cities takes most of a day, so treat it as a travel day rather than a sightseeing day. Flights are frequent and short, but add airport time at both ends. Amtrak runs a slower coastal route; check current schedules and times before booking.

Within each city, the difference matters more than the distance: Los Angeles needs a car for most sights, while San Francisco is easier without one.
