Bangkok vs Singapore: which should you visit?

Singapore wins on ease. The MRT reaches almost everything you want to see, English is the working language, tap water is drinkable, and a first-time visitor can land, check in and be eating dinner within two hours without a single negotiation. The trade-off is price: hotels, drinks and attractions cost far more than in Thailand, and the city is small enough that three nights covers the headline sights.

Bangkok wins on range per baht. Grand palaces and riverside temples, canal boats, night markets, and street food that costs less than a coffee in Singapore. It is hotter, louder and harder to walk, and you will spend more time in traffic or on the Skytrain than you expect. Four or five nights suits it better than three.

Neither is a mistake. If this is your first long-haul trip to Asia and you want a soft landing, start in Singapore. If you want the version of Southeast Asia people describe — temples, tuk-tuks, ฿60 noodles — start in Bangkok and use it as the hub for the rest of Thailand.

Both are year-round destinations with tropical heat and sudden rain. Bangkok has a clearer dry season from November to February; Singapore stays warm and humid all year, with more rain from November to January. Costs below are 2026 estimates for one person, mid-range, excluding flights.

Choose Bangkok if food is the reason you are travelling, if your budget is under about $100 a day, or if you want a base for the rest of Thailand — Chiang Mai, the Andaman coast or the Gulf islands are all a short flight away. It also suits travellers who like a city that stays up late and does not mind spending 30 minutes getting somewhere.

It is the weaker choice if you have mobility limits, travel with very young children in April, or hate heat and traffic. Air quality in the dry-season burning months, roughly February to April, is a real planning factor (check current readings).

Choose Singapore for a first trip with children, for a short stopover of two or three nights, or if you want a city where everything works: clean MRT, English signage, safe streets at night, drinkable tap water. It also suits travellers who would rather pay more and plan less, and anyone combining Asia with a longer flight onward from Changi.

It is the weaker choice if you are chasing temples and street markets, if your budget is tight, or if you want a beach holiday. Sentosa beaches are engineered and small; the region's real beaches are elsewhere.

The two cities are about 2 hours 20 minutes apart by nonstop flight, with many departures daily, so pairing them is easy and common. A workable shape is 4 nights in Bangkok, then 3 in Singapore, or the reverse if you want to end somewhere calmer. Book the flight as a separate one-way; low-cost carriers on this route are usually cheaper than adding it to a long-haul ticket (check fares).

If you have more time, use Bangkok as the start of a Thailand loop and keep Singapore as the finish: Bangkok, then Chiang Mai or the islands, then Singapore before flying home. That gives you the cheap, chaotic version and the polished one without backtracking.

Bangkok sits about 1,430 km north of Singapore by air; nonstop flights take roughly 2 h 20 m and run through the day. There is no practical train or bus option for a short trip — overland via Malaysia takes well over a day. Both cities are major air hubs, so open-jaw tickets (into one, out of the other) usually cost little more than a return.
