Columbia is a planned community in Howard County, built from the 1960s as ten villages around a lakefront core rather than a downtown grid. There is no old town to wander: you come for Merriweather Post Pavilion concerts, the lakefront paths, village-center shops and easy access to Baltimore, Washington and Ellicott City. Most visitors stay one or two nights, or use it as a cheaper, quieter base for the Baltimore–Washington corridor.

Get around
A car is the practical choice: villages are spread out, streets wind, and buses run mostly hourly with limited weekend service. RTA routes link the villages, the mall, BWI Airport and the BWI Rail Station. A paved path network and the lakefront trails work for walking and cycling, but hills and winding roads make long bike rides harder than the map suggests.
