Colonia del Sacramento

Colonia del Sacramento is a 1680 Portuguese river port on the Rio de la Plata, 1 h from Buenos Aires by fast ferry and 2.5–3.5 h from Montevideo by bus. The historic district is a small peninsula you cross on foot in an afternoon; the town's value is the walk, the river sunsets and a slow meal, not a checklist. Most travellers come for one night between Argentina and Uruguay, or as a day trip from Buenos Aires.

Scams and watch-outs

- Photography is banned inside the municipal museums.
- Ferry and bus seats sell out on summer weekends and holidays: book ahead rather than trusting walk-up space.
Colonia is a small, calm town and feels safe day and night; the real risks are uneven cobblestones, river currents if you swim, and petty theft of unattended bags at the ferry terminal in summer.
