Colombo is a morning-and-evening city: do Beira Lake and Pettah before 10:30, hide from the heat at midday, walk the seafront after 16:30 — and leave a wide margin for the airport, which is far and the road is slow.
Colombo is hot, humid and spread along one coast road. Its sights are close as the crow flies, but pavements are narrow or missing and the traffic peaks twice a day. The trips that go wrong are the ones that walk at noon, drag suitcases through Pettah, or leave for Katunayake with less than a three-hour margin. Four clusters cover a first visit; most travellers use Colombo as the first or last night of a longer island trip.

Walk inside a cluster, tuk-tuk or car between them. Suburban trains run along the coast south of the centre; city buses are cheap but slow and hard to navigate on a first visit.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Temples: Shoulders and knees covered; shoes and hats off before the grounds; never turn your back to a Buddha statue for a photo.
- Shoes: Off at temple entrances and some homes — look for the shoe rack at the door.
- Head gesture: A side-to-side head wobble usually means agreement, not disagreement; if unsure, ask in words.
- Right hand: Eat and hand things over with the right hand where local custom is followed, especially at rice-and-curry eating houses.
- Poya days: Dress and behave a little more conservatively around temples on the monthly full-moon holiday; alcohol sales are banned that day.
- Photos: Ask before photographing people, and never photograph guards, military posts or the harbour.

Scams and watch-outs

- Gem and jewellery 'investment' pitches from a friendly stranger who leads you to a shop with a story about export profit: this is a long-running scam, walk away.
- 'I waited for you' driver claims after a stop: pay only the agreed one-way fare, or book the return leg separately in the app.
