Colombia is good value in pesos, and the biggest lever is where you sleep and how you move. A dorm bed in a hostel costs COP 50,000–90,000, while a mid-range hotel room runs COP 150,000–300,000. The gap between those two numbers decides your whole day.

Food is where budget travel in Colombia is easiest. The menú del día, also called corrientazo, is a set lunch of soup, rice, meat, beans or salad and a small juice for COP 15,000–25,000. Eat that twice a day and your food spend stays near COP 40,000–70,000. A tinto (small black coffee) is COP 1,500–3,000 and a Club Colombia or Águila beer is COP 4,000–10,000.

Transport: metro and city buses cost COP 10,000–30,000 a day in Bogotá or Medellín. Ride-hailing is a separate line in the budget: a single Uber trip across Medellín is COP 12,000–30,000, so two or three rides a day can outspend a metro pass. Long legs are the bigger trap. Mountain roads make bus journeys far longer than the map suggests, so a COP 60,000–120,000 bus ticket can cost you a whole day. A domestic flight is about COP 300,000 one way and is often the better trade if your time is short.

Sights add COP 15,000–40,000 a day at the budget end: Museo del Oro entry is about COP 5,000, and Tayrona park entry for foreigners is about COP 80,000–95,000 in high season. Islas del Rosario day trips run COP 150,000–300,000.

Cash matters. Cards work in hotels, malls and many restaurants, but small shops, markets and rural areas want pesos. Use ATMs inside malls, banks or supermarkets in daytime, and expect a 10% propina voluntaria suggestion on restaurant bills, which you may accept or decline. Remember the $ sign means pesos: $50.000 is 50,000 pesos (about US$12), not dollars.
