Colombia
Best time to visit Colombia: weather and seasons by month
Go December to March for the whole country: dry Andes, dry breezy Caribbean coast, highest prices and crowds. July to August is the second-best window, drier in the Andes with whales on the Pacific coast. April–May and September–November are wet, cheaper and quieter — pick them only if you accept afternoon rain and road delays.

Summary by passport, month and cost
Colombia's weather is regional, not national: the Andes have two rainy seasons, the Caribbean coast has one, and the Amazon and Pacific are wet most of the year. Use the tables below to match your dates and route, then check the month-by-month verdicts on the country page.
Entry rules do not change with the season. Most US, UK, Canadian, Australian, Irish and EU passport holders can enter visa-free as visitors for a short stay; confirm your own passport's current limit before booking.
- Cost bands are 2026 estimates and vary by city and season; see the cost page for daily budgets.
- High season (Dec–mid-Jan, Semana Santa, Aug in Medellín) pushes flights and hotels up; shoulder weeks in May and September are the cheapest.

Step by step: how to pick your dates
Start with your route, not the calendar. If you are doing the classic first trip — Bogotá, Medellín with the Coffee Region, and Cartagena — December to March gives you dry conditions in all three, which is why it is the safest single answer. July and August work almost as well, with drier Andes and a livelier Medellín, though the coast is more mixed.
If your trip is coastal only, aim for December to April: Cartagena, Santa Marta and Tayrona are breezy and dry, and the sea is calm. Avoid September to November on the coast, when rain is heaviest and domestic flights are more likely to be delayed.
If you are heading to the Amazon around Leticia or the Pacific coast around Nuquí, accept rain whenever you go. The Pacific's reward is the whale season from July to October; the Amazon is wettest from December to May and slightly drier from June to September.
Then weigh crowds and price. Late December to mid-January, Semana Santa (March or April, check) and the August flower festival in Medellín are the busiest and most expensive windows. May, September, October and November are the quietest and cheapest, at the cost of rain in the Andes and on the coast.
Finally, check the calendar for long weekends (puentes) and festivals. Colombian public holidays move to Mondays, which fills roads out of the cities and shortens hotel availability in nearby towns. Barranquilla Carnival (February or March, check) and Cartagena's independence festival in mid-November are regional spikes.
| Month | Verdict | Crowds | Price | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | Go | High | High | Dry Andes and coast; Colombian holidays fill Cartagena until mid-month |
| February | Go | Medium | Medium | Dry and clear; Carnival may fall here (check); Tayrona closure possible (check) |
| March | Go | Medium | Medium | Dry on the coast; Semana Santa may fall here (check) |
| April | Caution | Medium | Medium | First rains in the Andes; Easter crowds if late |
| May | Caution | Low | Low | Wet in Bogotá and Medellín; mudslide risk on roads |
| June | Caution | Medium | Medium | Mixed; mid-year school holidays from late June |
| July | Go | Medium | Medium | Drier Andes; whales on the Pacific coast (Jul–Oct) |
| August | Go | High | High | Feria de las Flores in Medellín; windy kite season in Bogotá |
| September | Caution | Low | Low | Coast getting wetter; quieter everywhere |
| October | Caution | Low | Low | Wettest month in many regions; flight delays on the coast |
| November | Caution | Medium | Medium | Rain in the Andes; Cartagena independence festival (11 Nov) |
| December | Go | High | High | Dry season returns; Medellín's Christmas lights; coast sells out |
Notes
Colombia sits on the equator, so daylight is roughly 12 hours all year and there is no winter to avoid. What changes is rain, wind and crowds. Altitude matters more than season: Bogotá sits above 2,600 m and stays cool, so pack layers whatever month you choose.
Two rainy seasons affect the Andes: April–May and October–November. Roads in mountain regions can be hit by landslides in those months, and long overland journeys take far longer than the map suggests even in good weather. Flying between bases is the practical option.
Tayrona National Park closes for short maintenance periods each year, often around February and June, with dates set annually. If the park is central to your trip, confirm the current closure before booking flights.
Prices quoted on this site are 2026 estimates. High-season surcharges are largest for domestic flights and coastal hotels; booking two to three months ahead helps in December and August.
FAQ
Questions people ask
What is the best time of year to visit Colombia?
December to March. It is dry in the Andes and on the Caribbean coast, which suits the classic Bogotá–Medellín–Cartagena route. July to August is the second-best window, drier in the Andes with whales on the Pacific coast.
When is the cheapest time to visit Colombia?
May, September, October and November, when crowds and prices are lowest. You trade this for rain in the Andes and on the coast, and a higher chance of domestic flight delays. Book early for December and August, the most expensive windows.
What is the weather like in Colombia each month?
January to March and December are dry in the Andes and on the coast. April, May, October and November are wet in the Andes. September to November is wettest on the Caribbean coast. The Amazon and Pacific are wet most months, with Pacific whales from July to October.
Does Colombia have a rainy season?
Yes, two in the Andes: April–May and October–November. The Caribbean coast is wettest September–November. The Amazon and Pacific coasts see rain year-round, so plan around activities rather than expecting dry weeks.
Should I avoid Colombia in the rainy season?
No, but adjust. Expect afternoon showers, muddier trails and possible road delays from landslides in mountain regions. Fares and hotels are cheaper, cities stay fully usable, and short flights between bases avoid the worst of the roads.
When can I see whales in Colombia?
July to October on the Pacific coast, around Nuquí and Bahía Solano. Humpbacks migrate north from Antarctic waters in that window. The coast is one of the wettest places on Earth, so build in spare days for weather.
