Cold Spring is a Hudson Highlands village of about 2,000 people, 52.5 miles north of New York City on the Metro-North Hudson Line. It works as a car-free day trip: the station is two minutes from Main Street, and the hiking starts at the village edge. Most visitors come for one day; a second night only pays off if you want Boscobel, a kayak tour and a long ridge hike.

Get around
Walk. Main Street, the station and the waterfront are within 10 minutes on foot, and the ground is steep in places, so allow time. There is no easy taxi service in the village. On weekends a small trolley loops between village sights, the Garrison station and Boscobel; ask at the tourism booth by the tracks. Metro-North stops at Cold Spring and, one station north, at Breakneck Ridge on weekends.
