Coimbra
One night is enough: university hill and the Joanina Library in the morning, Baixa and fado at night. Two nights only if you add a day trip.
Coimbra sits on the Lisbon–Porto line and holds one of Europe's oldest universities, a UNESCO site since 2013. The historic centre is compact and walkable, split between Baixa by the Mondego and Alta on the hill above. Most travellers see it in a single night between the two big cities; a second night buys you a day trip to Fátima, Aveiro or the coast.

Get around
Walk: Baixa, the hill and Santa Clara are all within about 30 minutes on foot, though the climb to Alta is steep. SMTUC city buses cover the rest, and the Linha Azul (Pantufinhas) links lower and upper town. A market elevator connects Rua Padre António Vieira with the area by the municipal market; a valid SMTUC ticket is needed. Driving and parking in the medieval centre are hard: leave the car at the hotel.

Scams and watch-outs
- The hill up to the university is steep and cobbled: wear shoes with grip, not smooth soles.
- Long-distance trains now stop at Coimbra-B, not Coimbra-A; change to a local train for the centre, covered by your ticket.
- Some intercity buses (Flixbus and others) leave from a roadside lot up Avenida Fernão de Magalhães, not the bus station: no ticket office, no benches.
- Queima das Fitas and Festa das Latas fill the city with students and noise; book ahead or avoid those weeks.
- Summer afternoons in the Baixa can be very hot; do the hill early.
Coimbra is a safe, walkable city; the real risks are the steep cobbles, pickpockets in the busy Baixa at night, and summer heat on the hill. Keep an eye on bags in crowds and take the hill slowly.
