Coimbatore is an industrial city of about 2 million in western Tamil Nadu, known for engineering, textiles and a mild year-round climate. Sights are spread out and the city works best as a base for the Nilgiri foothills, Valparai and the Ooty road, not as a tick-list stop. Most travellers give it two nights or use it as a rail and bus junction.

City buses run from Gandhipuram and Singanallur; autos have no meters, so agree the fare before boarding. App taxis and app bikes are easy to book. Trains from Coimbatore Junction reach Chennai, Bengaluru, Kochi and beyond; buses for Ooty change at Mettupalayam.
