Coffin Bay
Give Coffin Bay two nights if you have a 4WD and want the national park beaches; one night is enough for the oyster tour and the Oyster Walk.
Coffin Bay is a small oyster town on the Eyre Peninsula, 40 minutes by road from Port Lincoln and about 8 hours' drive from Adelaide. There is no public transport, so you need a car. The town itself is a foreshore walk, a general store and a handful of places to eat; the reason to come is Coffin Bay National Park to the west and the oyster farms in the bay. Two nights lets you do both without rushing.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- No public transport: without a car you are stuck in town.
- National park entry is ticketed; buy online or at the gate before you drive in.
- Some park tracks are 4WD-only and soft sand catches 2WD cars.
- Mobile coverage is patchy: Telstra is the most reliable, Optus is patchy, Vodafone is poor.
- Summer school holidays fill the town; book beds and tours weeks ahead.
- Swimming and rock fishing on the open ocean side are exposed; check conditions before you commit.
Coffin Bay is a small, low-crime town and safe for tourists. The real risks are the ocean and the roads: cold water and strong currents on the open beaches, soft sand and 4WD tracks in the park, wildlife on the highway at dawn and dusk, and long distances with patchy phone coverage.
