Cocoa Beach
Give Cocoa Beach 2 nights: one beach day, one Space Coast day. Base on or near A1A; skip it as a Miami-style resort town.
Cocoa Beach is a small Atlantic barrier-island town on Florida's Space Coast, about 1 hour east of Orlando and next door to Cape Canaveral and Kennedy Space Center. It is a beach-and-launch base rather than a sightseeing city: the sand, the pier, surf shops and the space program do the work. Two nights covers it; three if you want a launch attempt and a lagoon kayak trip.

Get around
A car is the practical choice: A1A runs the length of the island and FL-520 and FL-528 connect to I-95 and Orlando. Space Coast Area Transit route 9 runs along A1A between Cape Canaveral and south Cocoa Beach, roughly $1.25 a ride (check current fare and timetable). Bike lanes run along the main roads and the beachside blocks are walkable.

- Downtown / Minuteman Causeway area
- Restaurants, bars and shops around the causeway; 5–15 min walk or a short drive to the sand.
- South Cocoa Beach
- Quieter motels and suites south of the causeway; cheaper, but you need a car for everything.
- Port Canaveral / Cape Canaveral
- Cruise-terminal hotels 10–15 min north; good for a pre-cruise night, not for beach time.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Hurricane season runs Jun–Nov; check storm forecasts before booking a summer trip.
- Launch days fill hotels and roads around Cape Canaveral: book early and expect traffic on FL-528 and A1A.
- Rip currents are common on the Atlantic side; swim near lifeguarded areas.
- Summer heat and afternoon thunderstorms are routine; plan beach time before noon.
- Prices on A1A are resort-town prices; the mainland (Cocoa, Merritt Island) is cheaper.
A safe, small beach town; the real risks are rip currents, summer heat and storms, and launch-day traffic. Lock the car and keep valuables off the sand.
