Coarsegold
Pass through Coarsegold on Route 41 unless you need a bed, the casino, or the late-October tarantula festival: one night at most, and Oakhurst is the better base.
Coarsegold is a small Sierra foothills town on California Route 41, about 45 minutes north of Fresno and 30 minutes south of Oakhurst, the last service town before Yosemite's south entrance. There is no sightseeing core: the draw is the Chukchansi Gold Resort & Casino, a handful of Highway 41 restaurants, and a bed for the night before or after the park. Most travellers pass through in under an hour; a night makes sense if you arrive late, want a casino floor, or are timing the late-October tarantula season.

Get around
You need a car. Route 41 is the main street and everything in town sits on or just off it; there is no local transit worth planning around. YARTS runs Highway 41 between Fresno and Yosemite Valley with stops at Coarsegold Market and Chukchansi, mid-May to mid-September, and the fare includes park entry — useful if you do not want to drive into the park. Madera County Connection's Eastern Madera County route gives limited Monday–Friday service from Madera.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Route 41 is a two-lane mountain road: expect slow RVs, deer at dusk and chain controls in winter.
- Summer foothill heat: carry water, do not leave anyone or a pet in a parked car.
- Cell coverage is patchy in the canyons between Coarsegold and Yosemite; download offline maps before you leave Fresno.
- Casino floors and bars are 21+; bring photo ID.
- Tarantula Festival weekend (late October) fills local beds: book weeks ahead.
Low street-crime risk in a town of about 1,800 people. The real hazards are the drive: two-lane Route 41, winter ice and chain controls, deer at dusk, and summer heat. Keep valuables out of sight in parked cars at trailheads.
