Clydach and Pontardawe
Clydach a Phontardawe
Use Clydach and Pontardawe for a valley stay only if the buses or a car suit your plans: 1–2 nights, then move to Swansea or Neath.
Clydach and Pontardawe are two villages in the Swansea Valley, about 15–20 minutes by road from Swansea and Neath. There is no town-centre hotel cluster, so they work as a quiet base for the Brecon Beacons, Gower and Afan Forest rather than as a sightseeing destination in their own right. Rail access: check. Come with a car, or accept slow buses.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- No train station: plan around buses or drive.
- Rural lanes are narrow and often single-track; expect passing places.
- Valley roads flood after heavy rain; check before driving the A4067.
- Many pubs and cafés close early on Sundays and Mondays.
Quiet, low-crime villages; the real risks are rural driving (narrow lanes, flooding, livestock) and thin late-night transport. Book taxis and check the last bus before an evening out.
