Clonmacnoise is a medieval monastery on the River Shannon in County Offaly, founded in the 6th century. Its remains include nine churches, two round towers, a cathedral and carved crosses. The small settlement has few visitor amenities, so most visitors come for a half-day from elsewhere.

Get around
Walk around the monastery compound; allow about 90 minutes. Wheelchair access reaches the visitor centre and the west side, but other areas involve steps or grass. Local Link Bus 850 connects Athlone with Clonmacnoise and continues to Shannonbridge, Banagher, Birr and Roscrea. The Nun's Church and Horseman's Stone are separate from the main site.

English is everyone's working language, with Irish (Gaeilge) on every sign and spoken daily in the Gaeltacht. You never need Irish, but a few words are welcome and the Hiberno-English idioms are part of the experience.
