Clonakilty
Cloch na gCoillte
Give Clonakilty one night, two if you want Inchydoney beach and Drombeg: it is a small market town, not a multi-day base.
Clonakilty is a market and seaside town in west Cork, about 50 km southwest of Cork city, with a population of roughly 4,600. It is known for Michael Collins, black pudding, a distillery and the beach at Inchydoney 3 km south. The town itself takes half a day; the coast and stone circles around it take the rest. Most visitors come by car, because the interesting places sit off the main road.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake, first names quickly; avoid: Over-formality; it reads as coldness
- Conversation: Banter, weather and sport; self-deprecating humour; avoid: Opening with Northern Ireland, religion or the Famine
- Pubs: Buy your round; chat at the bar; avoid: Leaving a round without buying one
- Identity: Say Ireland, or the Republic when you need to distinguish; avoid: 'Southern Ireland' and calling it British
- Driving: Lift a finger from the wheel to thank drivers who pull in for you; avoid: Stopping on narrow bends for photos
Scams and watch-outs
- Inchydoney has strong tides and no lifeguard cover outside the summer season: swim between the flags, if any.
- Drombeg and Reenascreena stone circles sit on or beside private farmland: stay on the marked path and close gates.
- Lios-na-gCon hill fort near Darrara is derelict and overgrown, with access blocked: do not plan a trip around it.
- Many restaurants and pubs close early on Monday and Tuesday outside summer.
- Rural roads are narrow and hedged; drive on the left and expect tractors and cyclists.
Clonakilty is a low-crime small town and feels safe at night. The real risks are the sea at Inchydoney and on the headlands, narrow roads, and a long walk home in the dark on unlit lanes: take a taxi after a late session.
