Clarence Town
Skip as a base unless you want a quiet Williams River stop: half a day on foot, one night at most, and you need your own car to get here.
Clarence Town is a small Williams River township in the Hunter region of New South Wales, with a population of about 2,000 in the wider area and a compact centre you can walk end to end in 15 minutes. There is no public transport in, so it works as a self-drive pause between Newcastle and the upper Hunter rather than a destination in its own right. Come for the river, the bakehouse and a night in an old pub, then move on.

- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- No public transport serves Clarence Town: without a car you are stranded.
- Fuel, groceries and opening hours are limited; stock up in Raymond Terrace or Maitland.
- Rural roads here are unlit and carry wildlife at dawn and dusk.
- Swim in the Williams River only where locals do, and never alone after rain when the current is up.
Very low street crime; the real risks are rural driving at dawn and dusk, summer heat, and river currents after rain. Check the fire danger rating before any bush walking.
