Clara

One night is enough: see the Clara Bog boardwalk, then move on to Tullamore or Athlone. Skip it as a base unless you are visiting family.

Clara is a small midlands town of about 3,400 people on the Dublin–Galway railway, roughly 1 h from Dublin Heuston. Its one real sight is Clara Bog, a raised bog with a 1 km boardwalk 2 km south of town. Most travellers pass through on the train; a half-day stop covers it.

Get around

The town is small enough to walk. Clara Bog boardwalk is 2 km south on the Rahan road with a small parking layby; no bus goes there, so walk, cycle or drive. Trains run every couple of hours to Dublin, Tullamore, Athlone and Galway.

  • Rural roads have no footpath in places; walk facing traffic and wear something visible.

Clara is a quiet town and feels safe day and night. The real risks are rural roads without footpaths, wet bog ground off the boardwalk, and going out without rain gear.
