Clacton-on-Sea is the largest town on the Tendring peninsula and one of the closest traditional seaside resorts to London, about 90 minutes by direct train from Liverpool Street. It is a pier, beach and promenade town rather than a sightseeing city: one day covers the seafront, the pier and the gardens, and a second day only pays off if you add the coast path, a nature reserve or a day trip to Colchester or Harwich. Most visitors come for a day trip or a short weekend in summer.

Get around
The centre, pier and seafront are compact and walkable in 15–20 minutes. Local buses (First Essex and Hedingham) cover the suburbs and out-of-town retail parks; most routes pass the railway station, which is the easiest place to pick one up. Parking is cheap and plentiful outside peak summer weekends.

Scams and watch-outs
- Parking and traffic are difficult on summer weekends and during the Clacton Air Show.
- The seafront is seasonal: some cafés, kiosks and attractions close or run short hours from October to Easter.
- Swim only between the lifeguard flags; lifeguards are seasonal, not year-round.
- Jaywick, immediately west of Clacton, is run-down and has high deprivation; the beach and commercial areas are fine, but do not wander its residential streets.
- There is no proper bus station: stops are spread through the centre and displays only show that street's departures. If unsure, walk to the railway station.
Clacton is a normal British seaside town: the beach, pier and shopping streets are fine by day. Avoid walking residential streets late at night, and skip Jaywick's residential area west of town.
