Clackline
Stop 20–40 min for the old bridge and railway coach on the Perth–Northam drive; skip the overnight unless you want free camping at Eadine Springs.
Clackline is a Wheatbelt village of about 310 people on the Great Eastern Highway, 80 km east of Perth and 17 km west of Northam. It exists on this site because of a railway junction that was re-routed in 1966 and a highway that was re-aligned around the village in 2008. What is left is a short, free, roadside stop: a 1934 timber bridge, a railway carriage now used as a community post office, a lion monument, and a derelict brickworks 2 km west. You need a car; the Transwa coach between Perth and Northam stops at the crossroads only if you book ahead.

Scams and watch-outs

- Summer heat and bushfire risk: check the fire danger rating before you leave Perth.
- The brickworks site is derelict — do not enter the teetering buildings.
- Mobile signal is 4G from Optus and Telstra only; Vodafone has no coverage here.
A quiet highway village and generally safe. The real risks are heat, bushfire and the derelict brickworks buildings; there is no fuel, no shop and no hospital in the village.
