Civitella del Tronto
Half a day is enough: see the fortress, walk the old town, then move on to Teramo or Ascoli Piceno.
Civitella del Tronto is a hilltop town in the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park, best known for its massive Spanish fortress — the largest in Italy and second-largest in Europe. The town was the last to surrender during Italian unification (20 March 1861). Most visitors come for a half-day from Teramo or Ascoli Piceno, see the fortress and the views, then leave.
