Ciudad Victoria is the capital of Tamaulipas, 246 km from Monterrey and 319 km from the US border, sitting where the coastal plain meets the Sierra Madre Oriental. It is a working state-capital city, not a resort: a museum, a zoo, a botanical garden, a market and mountain country west of town. Most travellers pass through on MEX-85 or use it as a base for the Sierra. One night covers the centre; two if you want the Sierra or the reservoir.

Get around
The centre is walkable and taxis are plentiful; use hotel- or restaurant-called sitios, and Uber or inDrive for the rest (inDrive lets you bid and can be cheaper). City buses and minibuses run 32 routes but are hard to use without Spanish. For the Sierra, the reservoir or the airport you need a car or a booked taxi.
