Ciudad Mier
Go as a daylight half-day from Reynosa or Rio Grande City, not as a base: 3–4 h on foot covers the centre, then leave before dark.
Ciudad Mier is a small Pueblo Mágico on the Rio Grande in northern Tamaulipas, 112 km west of Reynosa on MEX-2. Its draw is a compact grid of restored 18th- and 19th-century stone houses and the Pinto Bean Museum, which tells the 1842 Battle of Mier. The town was largely emptied by cartel violence in 2010 and has not fully repopulated; the US State Department keeps Tamaulipas under a do-not-travel advisory, so treat this as a daylight stop, not a place to sleep.
