Stay 1–2 nights only if you are using Chumphon as a ferry or train stop; the town itself is a transit hub, not a beach base.
Chumphon is the Gulf's transport hinge: it is the fastest ferry point to Ko Tao and a stop on the Bangkok–Surat Thani rail and road line. The town has a national museum, a night market and cheap guesthouses, while the real beaches (Thung Wua Laen, Ao Bo Mao, Hat Sai Ri) sit 15–30 km north near the airport. Most travellers pass through in a night; two nights lets you see the coast without rushing the ferry.

- Greeting: A wai (palms together, slight bow) to return a greeting; a smile and nod for shop staff; avoid: Waiing children or service staff first — it confuses; hugging strangers

Scams and watch-outs
- Two bus terminals: most long-distance buses use the out-of-town one, about 10–16 km south. Confirm which terminal your ticket uses before you arrive.
- Gulf ferry crossings are weather-dependent; the Oct–Dec monsoon can cancel or rough up sailings to Ko Tao.
- The airport and the ferry pier are on opposite sides of town — budget about 1 hour for the roughly 60 km between them.
- Some listed restaurants and bars close or change hands; check before you walk.
Chumphon is a low-crime transit town; the real risks are road travel on Hwy 41, monsoon ferry cancellations and unlit stretches between the town and the beaches. Use the tourist police line (1155) if you need English help.
