Chula Vista
Base in Chula Vista only if you have a car or a reason (family, marina, cheaper beds): 1–2 nights, then San Diego or the border.
Chula Vista is San Diego County's second city, 15 km south of downtown San Diego and just north of the Mexican border. It is a residential and business city with a marina, a marsh nature centre and an Olympic training site, not a sightseeing town. Most travellers sleep here for lower hotel rates, a family stop, or a border crossing at San Ysidro, and drive into San Diego for the day.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Distances are long and buses infrequent: without a car, plan around the trolley line.
- Summer heat inland (Eastlake, Otay Ranch) runs well above the coast.
- Border traffic at San Ysidro can add an hour each way: cross early or late.
- Some budget motels on Main Street get poor reports: read recent reviews before booking.
Chula Vista is generally safe for visitors; the real risks are traffic on I-5 and I-805, long unlit stretches near the marsh and marina at night, and summer heat inland. Keep valuables out of sight in parked cars.
