Christmas
Skip as a base: see Fort Christmas and Orlando Wetlands in 2–3 hours, then sleep in Orlando or Titusville, 30–40 min away.
Christmas is a crossroads town on FL-50, 20 miles east of Orlando, founded as a fort on 25 December 1837. It has a preserved fort and old-town buildings, a small animal park and free wetlands trails, but almost no hotels or chain restaurants, so nearly everyone visits as a half-day stop between Orlando and the Space Coast.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- No hotel strip, no chain restaurants: eat before or after, or bring food.
- Summer heat, afternoon thunderstorms and heavy mosquitoes; wetlands trails flood after rain.
- Wildlife areas: alligators are common — keep distance and keep dogs leashed or leave them home.
- Some Orange County park gates close at 6 pm in winter (8 pm in summer): check before a late stop.
Very low crime for a US small town; the real risks are highway driving on FL-50, summer heat and lightning, and alligators or snakes near the wetlands — stay on marked trails and boardwalks.
