Christchurch itinerary: 1, 2 and 3 days

Christchurch is a small town at the meeting point of the Rivers Stour and Avon, just east of Bournemouth. The priory, the quay and the harbour are the core, and all three fit into a single unhurried day. Two days let you walk out to Hengistbury Head and along the Stour valley without rushing. Three days make sense only if you use Christchurch as a base for Bournemouth, Poole or the New Forest.

If you have one day, do the priory in the morning, walk the quay and harbour in the afternoon, and finish at Mudeford for the harbour mouth. If you have two, put Hengistbury Head and the beach on day two. If you have three, take a bus or train to Bournemouth or Poole on day three.

Day one: start at Christchurch Priory, a large Norman church with a long history and free entry. Walk down to the quay, where the Stour and Avon meet, then follow the harbour path east towards Mudeford. The walk to Mudeford Quay is flat and takes about 40 minutes each way; you can also take a bus. Eat at one of the quay or Mudeford pubs, then walk back along the water.

Day two: head to Hengistbury Head, a headland with a sand spit, a nature reserve and views across to the Isle of Wight on clear days. The walk from the town centre is about 45 minutes, or take a bus towards Southbourne. In the afternoon, walk the Stour valley path west of the town or visit the Red House Museum.

Day three: take the train or bus to Bournemouth for the pier and gardens, or to Poole for the quay and Brownsea Island ferries. Both are 15–30 minutes away. If you have a car, the New Forest is about 20 minutes west and makes a good half-day loop.

Christchurch works as a base if you want quiet evenings and riverside walks. If you want more restaurants, nightlife and beach facilities, stay in Bournemouth and visit Christchurch as a day trip.

Christchurch is a cheap day out. The priory is free, the quay and harbour paths are free, and the main costs are food, buses and any paid attractions. Budget £10–£25 per person per day for transport and incidentals if you are already staying nearby.

Check tide times before walking the harbour path or the Mudeford spit; parts can be cut off at high tide. Wear shoes you do not mind getting muddy after rain.

Buses between Christchurch, Bournemouth and Poole are frequent in summer and less so on Sundays and in winter. Check the last bus back if you are out at Mudeford in the evening.

The priory is an active church; services may limit access at certain times. Check before a special visit.

If you are coming from London, advance train tickets on South Western Railway are much cheaper than walk-up fares. Book as soon as your dates are fixed.
