Base here 3–4 nights if you want a quiet family beach with resort comfort; skip it if you want nightlife or cheap rooms — those are in Chaweng.
Choeng Mon is a crescent of bays on Ko Samui's northeast coast, 15 minutes from the airport and 5 minutes from Big Buddha. It is a resort strip first and a village second: a handful of upscale hotels between a 500 m beach and Highway 4171, with almost no budget beds left. Come for calm water, kayaks to the Ko Fan islets and easy family days; go elsewhere for bars and street food.

Get around
The area is small enough to walk: beach to main road is about 100 m. Songthaews rarely pass because Choeng Mon is off the island loop road, so use Grab or a metered taxi, or rent a car or motorbike for your stay. Distances: Big Buddha 5 min, Chaweng about 15 min, Nathon about 45 min.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: A wai (palms together, slight bow) to return a greeting; a smile and nod for shop staff; avoid: Waiing children or service staff first — it confuses; hugging strangers
- Head and feet: Keep feet on the floor, sit with legs folded to the side in temples; avoid: Touching heads (even children's), pointing feet, stepping over people or food
- Temples: Covered shoulders and knees, shoes off, sit lower than monks; avoid: Women touching monks or handing them things directly; climbing Buddha images
- Monarchy: Stand for the royal anthem in cinemas and at 08:00 and 18:00 in public places; avoid: Any joke or comment about the royal family; stepping on a banknote
- Keeping calm: Stay polite and smiling when things go wrong ('jai yen' — cool heart); avoid: Raising your voice; public anger loses the argument
- Names: Khun plus first name ('Khun Somchai'); nicknames are normal; avoid: Using the family name alone
- Home visit: Shoes off; bring fruit or sweets; step over the threshold, not on it; avoid: Sitting with feet towards the family shrine

Scams and watch-outs
- Songthaews are rare here — do not plan on flagging one down.
- East wind makes the water choppy and snorkelling visibility near zero.
- Do not walk above the high-tide mark on Ko Fan Yai: most of the island is a private resort.
- Beach restaurants charge a view premium for mediocre food; the main road is better value.
- Budget and midrange guesthouses closed in large numbers after 2020; book ahead.
Very safe for a beach resort; the real risks are motorbike accidents on Highway 4171, rip currents in the monsoon, and unmarked taxi fares — agree the price or use Grab.
