Chirk
Y Waun
Give Chirk one full day: castle and gardens in the morning, aqueduct and canal towpath after lunch. Sleep in Llangollen or Wrexham if you want a second night.
Chirk is a small border town in Wrexham county borough, on the A5 between Llangollen and Oswestry. Two things justify the stop: Chirk Castle, a late 13th-century fortress still lived in, and the 21 m-high Chirk Aqueduct carrying the Llangollen Canal over the Ceiriog valley. Both sit within a 30-minute walk of each other, and the town is a 25-minute train ride from Wrexham. Most travellers see it as a half-day or day trip from a Llangollen or Wrexham base rather than a place to sleep.

Get around
The town is small enough to walk: station to castle gate is about 25–30 min uphill, station to the aqueduct about 15 min. Buses along the A5 link Chirk with Llangollen, Wrexham and Oswestry (check current timetables). A car makes the Ceiriog Valley and the wider border easy; without one, plan around rail and the canal towpath.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- Chirk Castle opening is seasonal and can be limited outside summer and December: check the National Trust page before travelling.
- The walk from the station to the castle is uphill on lanes with no pavement in places.
- The aqueduct towpath is narrow and shared with cyclists and boat crews; keep left and hold dogs close.
- Rural bus services are thin in the evening: check the last departure back to your base.
Chirk is a quiet, low-crime town and feels safe on foot in daylight. The real risks are rural: unlit lanes after dark, fast A5 traffic, and slippery canal towpaths in rain.
