Chipata
Give Chipata one night as a border or South Luangwa stopover; skip it as a destination unless Ncwala (late Feb) or Kulamba (Aug) falls in your dates.
Chipata is the Eastern Province capital and the last real town before Malawi or the road north to South Luangwa. It has markets, supermarkets and ATMs, but few sights: the mosque, Kanjala Hill and the Down Shops fill half a day. Most travellers sleep one night, restock, then move on.

Get around
The town is spread out; walking works for the centre but is tiring in heat. Blue taxis have no meters — agree the fare first. Shared taxis run to the Malawi border and to Mfuwe when full.

Scams and watch-outs
- Shared taxis and minibuses leave only when full; a posted departure time means little.
- Agree taxi fares before you get in; there are no meters.
- Carry small kwacha notes for markets and shared taxis; not all stalls take cards.
- Long-distance buses fill up: arrive early and keep bags with you.
- Roads north and east can be slow and rough in the wet season.
Chipata is a busy, generally calm provincial town; the real risks are unlit roads at night, unmarked taxis and cash handling at markets. Keep to the centre after dark and use a taxi you called.
