Chioggia
Half-day trip from Venice or a one-night stop: see the canals, the fish market and the oldest working medieval clock, then move on.
Chioggia is a compact fishing town on the southern edge of the Venetian Lagoon, often called 'Little Venice' for its canals and narrow streets. It has a working fish market, a medieval clock tower and a handful of churches. Most visitors come as a half-day trip from Venice (1 hour by ferry) or as a quiet overnight stop between Venice and the Po Delta. The town is walkable and the main sights take 3–4 hours.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Say buongiorno (until mid-afternoon) or buonasera on entering shops and bars; avoid: Walking in and pointing without a greeting
- Cheek kisses: Two kisses, right cheek first, among friends; follow their lead; avoid: Kissing strangers or in business settings
- Dress: Smart-casual in cities; covered shoulders and knees in churches; avoid: Beachwear, bare chests and flip-flops away from the beach
- Queues: At delis and pharmacies take a number (numerino); avoid: Assuming the crowd at a bar counter is chaos — pay at the till first where asked
- Restaurants: Wait to be seated and ask for the bill; avoid: Splitting a bill item by item with a large group
- Conversation: Food, football and family are safe openers; avoid: Mafia jokes and north–south stereotypes
- Dinner at a home: Bring pastries, wine or flowers (not chrysanthemums, which are for funerals); avoid: Refusing seconds too firmly
Scams and watch-outs
- Ferry from Venice runs about 4–5 times a day; check the ACTV schedule in advance.
- Many restaurants close for lunch between 14:00 and 19:00.
- The fish market is open mornings only (closed Sunday and Monday).
- ZTL (limited traffic zone) in the centre; do not drive into it.
Chioggia is safe. Watch for pickpockets in the market and on the ferry. The main risk is summer heat and closed restaurants off-season.
