Chinandega is a hot agricultural and commercial city on the Northern Pacific Coast, 15 km inland from the ocean and below the Cordillera de Los Maribios volcanoes. Its four sights — Central Park, Santa Ana church, El Calvario and the Chorotega Nicarao archeological museum — fill half a day. Most travellers use it as a one-night stop for the beaches at Poneloya and Las Peñitas, the port at Corinto, or the volcano routes, not as a holiday base.
