Chimayó
Go for a half day: the Santuario plus one weaving stop, 40 min from Santa Fe. Sleep elsewhere unless you want a slow rural night.
Chimayó is a farming village of about 3,200 people at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, on the High Road between Española and Taos. Almost everyone comes for one building: the Santuario de Chimayó, a 19th-century church with a long healing reputation and a Good Friday pilgrimage that draws tens of thousands of walkers. The rest of the village is a low-key string of homes, weaving studios and one well-known restaurant. Two to three hours covers it; a night here only makes sense if you want quiet and a base for the mountain villages.

Get around
You need a car. NM 76 from Española and NM 503 from Pojoaque are the two approaches; both are two-lane mountain roads. The free NCRTD route 150 bus runs Monday–Friday between Española and Las Trampas and stops in Chimayó, but service is sparse and not useful for sightseeing. Inside the village everything is walkable once parked.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- NM 76 climbs and winds northeast of the village; winter snow and ice arrive fast — check road conditions before committing.
- Holy Week, especially Good Friday, brings large pedestrian crowds on the highways: drive slowly and expect delays and busy car parks.
- The Santuario is an active church: no tourist behaviour during Mass, and photography rules are posted on site.
- Rural roads have no lighting and patchy mobile signal; fill up in Española and carry water.
Quiet village; the tourist stops are fine in daylight. Main practical risks are mountain weather and driving: winter snow and ice on NM 76 and NM 503, no lighting on rural roads, patchy mobile signal, and long gaps between services. Lock your car and keep valuables out of sight at trailheads and church car parks.
