Chile
How much does a trip to Chile cost? Daily budget and prices
Plan on CLP 40,000–85,000 a day backpacking, CLP 123,000–240,000 mid-range and CLP 380,000+ for lodges, per person, before flights and park tickets. Chile is the priciest country on South America's west coast; Patagonia and San Pedro de Atacama push you to the top of each band.

Daily budget by travel style
These are per-person, per-day figures for 2026, assuming you share a room at mid-range and comfort level. They exclude international flights, domestic flights, park entry and multi-day treks, which are the costs that most often blow a Chile budget.
The bands are wide because Chile is 4,300 km long. Santiago and the central valley sit near the bottom of each band; San Pedro de Atacama, Puerto Natales and Torres del Paine sit at the top, and lodge prices in Patagonia are in a class of their own.
| Tier | Covers | Bed | Food | Transport | Sights | Total per day |

2026 estimate, per person. Extras (laundry, drinks, tips, pharmacy) add roughly CLP 3,000–40,000 depending on tier.
What individual things cost
Food is where you control the budget most easily. A menú del día — soup or salad, a main, sometimes a dessert — is the cheapest full meal of the day and is eaten at lunch, not dinner. Empanadas, completos and supermarket picnics keep a day under CLP 20,000 for food. Dinner in a Santiago restaurant with wine runs several times a set lunch.
Transport inside cities is cheap; the cost is in the distances between regions. Every region change is normally a flight, and domestic fares start around CLP 90,000 one way if booked early. Buses are slower and cheaper on the central routes.
| Item | Typical price | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Menú del día (set lunch) | CLP 7,000–12,000 | Lunch only, weekdays |
| Empanada de pino | CLP 2,500–4,000 | Street or bakery |
| Glass of wine | CLP 4,000–8,000 | Restaurant |
| Dorm bed, hostel | CLP 15,000–30,000 | Santiago and regional cities |
| Mid-range double room | CLP 50,000–90,000 | Per room, not per person |
| Domestic flight, one way | From about CLP 90,000 | Book early for the lowest fares |
| Torres del Paine entry, foreign adult | CLP 32,400 day / CLP 48,500 multi-day | check |
| Refugio bed on the W trek | US$60–150+ without meals | Books out months ahead |
| Rapa Nui National Park ticket, foreign visitor | About US$80, valid 10 days | check |
Where the money goes
Three items separate a CLP 60,000 day from a CLP 200,000 one: where you sleep, whether you eat set lunches or restaurant dinners, and how many guided tours you take. In San Pedro de Atacama and Puerto Natales, tours and park logistics are the main line item, and there is little cheap alternative — the sights are far from town and often need a guide or a rental car.
Patagonia is the single biggest variable. A refugio bunk on the W trek and an all-inclusive lodge in Torres del Paine can differ by a factor of ten for the same night in the same park. Decide which one you are doing before you set the rest of the budget.
The 19% IVA on hotel rooms is worth knowing about: foreign visitors who pay in US dollars or with a foreign card and show their entry record can be exempt. Ask when you book, because not every property applies it automatically.
When costs rise
Chilean summer (December to February) is high season on the coast and in Patagonia, and prices for lodging in Puerto Natales, Punta Arenas and Torres del Paine peak then. The Atacama is busiest in the same window and around Chilean holidays.
Ski season around Santiago (June to August) raises prices in the mountains, and national holidays fill domestic flights and buses. Booking flights and Patagonia beds two to three months ahead is the single biggest saving available.
Money practicalities
Cards are widely accepted in Santiago, Valparaíso and regional cities, including for tours and mid-range restaurants. Carry cash for small shops, markets, rural buses and tips. Patagonian towns have few ATMs and they run out in high season, so bring enough pesos for park days before you fly south.
Prices in this page are 2026 estimates in Chilean pesos. Your card's exchange rate and any foreign transaction fee will move the final number, so treat the bands as planning ranges rather than exact quotes.
Questions people ask
How much money do you need per day in Chile?
Backpackers manage on CLP 40,000–85,000 a day; mid-range travellers spend CLP 123,000–240,000; comfort level with lodges and private tours runs CLP 380,000 and up. These exclude flights, park tickets and treks. 2026 estimate, per person.
Is Chile expensive for tourists?
It is the most expensive country on South America's west coast, closer to southern Europe than to Bolivia or Peru. Cities are manageable if you eat set lunches and use buses; Patagonia and San Pedro de Atacama are where costs climb fastest.
What do meals, hotels and transport cost in Chile?
A set lunch is CLP 7,000–12,000, an empanada CLP 2,500–4,000 and a restaurant glass of wine CLP 4,000–8,000. Hostel dorms run CLP 15,000–30,000, mid-range doubles CLP 50,000–90,000. City transport is cheap; domestic flights start near CLP 90,000 one way.
How much should I budget for a two-week Chile trip?
Mid-range, two weeks, two or three regions: roughly CLP 1,700,000–3,400,000 per person for ground costs, plus domestic flights (about CLP 90,000 each) and park entry. Patagonia trekking or lodges can add several hundred thousand pesos.
Can I avoid the 19% hotel tax in Chile?
Foreign visitors who pay for the room in US dollars or with a foreign card and show their entry record can be exempt from the 19% IVA. Ask the property when booking, as not all apply it automatically.
Do I need cash in Chile?
Not in cities, where cards work almost everywhere. Do carry pesos for small shops, markets, rural buses and Patagonian towns, which have few ATMs and can run dry in high season.
