Skip Chiba as a base: it is a Tokyo suburb. Go only for a Lotte Marines game, Makuhari Messe, or as an optional rail stop on the way to Narita.
Chiba is the largest city in Chiba prefecture and sits inside the Tokyo sprawl, about 40 minutes from Tokyo Station on the JR Sobu Rapid line. There is no old town and no single headline sight. It works as a cheap hotel base near Narita airport, a convention stop at Makuhari Messe, or a baseball night at the Marine Stadium. Most travellers pass through.

Get around
The suspended Chiba Urban Monorail links Chiba Minato to Chiba station and branches north; it is the quickest way to the Port Tower. JR Sobu Rapid, Chuo-Sobu and Keiyo lines cover the wider city. Buses fill the gaps; taxis are easy to find at the station.

- Greeting: A small bow; a handshake if the other person offers; avoid: Hugs, back slaps, loud greetings

- Shrines: Rinse hands at the basin; bow twice, clap twice, bow once; avoid: Walking down the centre of the approach, which is for the deity

Scams and watch-outs
- This is a commuter city: rush-hour trains toward Tokyo are packed, 07:30–09:00.
- Sights are spread out and low-key; do not build a day around the castle alone.
- Marine Stadium right-field seats sit with the loudest supporters: pick another block if you want quiet.
One of Japan's safer big cities; the real risks are summer heat, rush-hour crowding and late-night streets near Sakaecho with no posted prices: ask the total before you sit.
