Chiapa de Corzo
Stay 1 night only if you want an early Sumidero Canyon boat before the day-trippers; otherwise sleep in San Cristóbal and come in for the day.
Chiapa de Corzo is a small colonial town on the Grijalva river, 15 km from Tuxtla Gutiérrez and the main dock for Sumidero Canyon speedboats. The centre is walkable in an hour: a huge plaza, La Pila fountain, a 16th-century Dominican church and a small Olmec-era dig. Most travellers pass through on the way to San Cristóbal; one night is enough, and the town is at its best during the January Fiesta Grande.

Combis and buses to Tuxtla Gutiérrez leave from the zócalo (look for 'Tuxtla' in the windscreen); taxis and mototaxis cover the docks and the highway hotels. For San Cristóbal, take an OCC bus toward Tuxtla and ask the driver to drop you at Chiapa de Corzo.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; a kiss on the right cheek among friends; avoid: Skipping 'buenos días' when entering a shop
- Punctuality: Be on time for tours and buses; avoid: Expecting social events to start on time
- Talking: Warm small talk, family, food, football; avoid: Jokes about cartels, the wall or migration
- Churches: Covered shoulders, quiet; avoid: Photos during mass
- Dining: Say 'provecho' to other diners when leaving; avoid: Rushing the waiter
Scams and watch-outs
- Canyon boats leave when full: in low season you may wait 1–2 hours, and last departures are around 14:30 (check current times).
- Boat drivers push for a tip before returning; M$50 per person is plenty.
- The archaeological site is small and low-key: don't plan a half-day for it.
- Afternoon heat is strong year-round; carry water and start sights early.
- Some highway restaurants and hotels sit 2–3 km from the centre: check the address before booking.
Chiapa de Corzo is a small, calm town by day; the real risks are heat, unlit riverbanks after dark and boat-tour tip pressure. Use taxis or mototaxis at night, keep to the centre, and check current state-level advice for Chiapas before travelling.
