Best tours in Chiang Mai: walking, food and day tours

Chiang Mai tours fall into four groups: the old city on foot, food and cooking, the mountains around Doi Suthep and Doi Inthanon, and the ethical elephant sanctuaries. You do not need all four. A first visit of three or four nights works well with one walking tour, one cooking class and one full-day trip out of town.

Walking tours are the cheapest way to get oriented, and the old city is small enough to cover on foot: the walled square with its moat, the main temples, and the lanes between them. Food tours run in the evening and mix market stalls with sit-down dishes. Cooking classes almost always start with a market visit and finish with you eating what you cooked.

For day trips, the standard routes are Doi Suthep and Wat Pha Lat, Doi Inthanon with its waterfalls and twin pagodas, and Chiang Rai as a long day. Chiang Rai is 3 h each way by road, so it is better as an overnight than a day tour.

Morning tours usually leave between 07:00 and 08:30, afternoon tours around 13:00, and food tours around 17:00–18:00. Full-day mountain trips run 10–12 h because of the drive. Cooking classes come in two sittings: morning with a market visit, or afternoon without one.

Prices depend on group size and what is included. Shared group tours are the cheapest; private cars with a driver-guide cost several times more per person but let you set the pace. Entrance fees to national parks and temples are often extra, so ask whether the quoted price includes them.

Tipping is not required but is common for guides and drivers. Carry small notes for temple donations and park fees.

Most tours start with pickup at your hotel if you are staying inside the old city or around Nimman. Outside those areas, operators usually name a meeting point, often a temple or a mall car park. Confirm the pickup window the day before; northern traffic is light compared with Bangkok, but mountain roads are slow and winding.

If you are arranging your own transport, songthaews (shared red trucks) cover short hops in the city, and rented scooters or cars work for Doi Suthep, which is close to town. Doi Inthanon is about 2 h each way and is easier as a tour or with a hired driver. Motion sickness tablets help on the switchbacks.

Chiang Mai International Airport is 10–15 minutes from the old city by taxi or ride-hailing app. If you are arriving on a morning flight, an afternoon tour is realistic; a full-day mountain tour on arrival day is not.
