Chianciano Terme
One night is enough to soak in the thermal pools and see the Etruscan museum; use it as a base for Val d'Orcia day-trips if you have a car.
Chianciano Terme is Tuscany's most famous spa town, with mineral springs known since Etruscan times. The town itself is small — a morning covers the Archaeological Museum and a park — but its position on the edge of Val d'Orcia makes it a practical base for exploring Montepulciano, Pienza and the wine hills. Most visitors come for a spa weekend or a single night between Siena and Orvieto.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Say buongiorno (until mid-afternoon) or buonasera on entering shops and bars; avoid: Walking in and pointing without a greeting
- Cheek kisses: Two kisses, right cheek first, among friends; follow their lead; avoid: Kissing strangers or in business settings
- Dress: Smart-casual in cities; covered shoulders and knees in churches; avoid: Beachwear, bare chests and flip-flops away from the beach
- Queues: At delis and pharmacies take a number (numerino); avoid: Assuming the crowd at a bar counter is chaos — pay at the till first where asked
- Restaurants: Wait to be seated and ask for the bill; avoid: Splitting a bill item by item with a large group
- Conversation: Food, football and family are safe openers; avoid: Mafia jokes and north–south stereotypes
- Dinner at a home: Bring pastries, wine or flowers (not chrysanthemums, which are for funerals); avoid: Refusing seconds too firmly
Scams and watch-outs
- Many spas close for a month in winter (usually January or February): check the official site before booking.
- Parking in the centre is limited; use the paid lots at the edge of town (Parcheggio Acquasanta or Parcheggio Via delle Terme).
- Restaurants in the centre often close for a midday break (13:00–19:00) outside summer.
- The Etruscan necropolis of Foce is an open site with no shelter: go in the morning or late afternoon in summer.
Chianciano Terme is a safe small town. Watch for uneven pavements in the old centre and for cars on the narrow streets near the spas. The main risk is heatstroke in summer: carry water and a hat.
