Chestermere
Skip as a base: no hotels, one lake, 20 min from Calgary. Come for a half-day on the water or a lakeside lunch, then sleep in Calgary.
Chestermere is a city of about 20,000 people immediately east of Calgary's ring road, built around a 1907 irrigation reservoir that is now the town's whole reason to exist. There is a ring of lakeside parks, a boat launch, golf, and a small strip of suburban shops and restaurants. There is no hotel in town, so almost everyone visits from Calgary and leaves the same day. Treat it as a half-day: lake walk, lunch, maybe a round of golf.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- No hotel in Chestermere: book in northeast Calgary and drive out.
- The lake is a shallow irrigation reservoir: summer algae blooms can close swimming (check local advisories).
- Winter lake ice is only safe when locally posted; do not walk on it otherwise.
- Suburban streets, no nightlife strip: last food orders are early by big-city standards.
A quiet commuter city and safe by any normal measure; the real risks are the lake (cold water, thin winter ice, algae closures) and deer on the roads at dusk.
