Chester
Give Chester one night, two if you sail or golf: it is a harbour village, not a sightseeing town. Base here only if you have a car.
Chester is a small South Shore harbour village about 65 km southwest of Halifax, known for yachting on Mahone Bay, a summer theatre and a pub that claims to be Nova Scotia's oldest. It works as a quiet one-night stop on the Halifax–Lunenburg run or as a slow summer base for sailing and golf. Without a car, the village is thin: the bus stops here, but the coast around it does not.

Get around
Walk the village centre in 10–15 minutes. A car is the practical way to reach the beaches, golf course and neighbouring towns; Maritime Bus links Halifax, Chester, Bridgewater and Lunenburg. A seasonal ferry runs from the village to Big Tancook and Little Tancook islands. The Chester Connector rail trail starts behind the Station 20 shop and is partly shared with motorised vehicles.

- Cell coverage is fine in the village but patchy on the trail and back roads.
Very safe for a small Canadian village; the real issues are dark, unlit back roads at night, deer and cyclists on Highway 3, and cold water if you swim or kayak off Mahone Bay.
