Cheshire is a small Berkshire town of about 3,200 people on MA Route 8, between Pittsfield and Adams. It has almost no lodging and few restaurants, but it sits on the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail and the Appalachian Trail, and Cheshire Reservoir gives it swimming, boating and fishing. Most travellers come for a half-day of trail and water, or sleep one night as a base for Mount Greylock and the northern Berkshires.

Get around
A car is the practical way to reach trailheads, boat ramps and the reservoir. In the town centre you can walk or bike: the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail runs parallel to Route 8 through Cheshire, and the Appalachian Trail crosses the centre. BRTA Route 1 stops in Cheshire Center on Railroad St near the post office, running between Pittsfield and North Adams via Lanesborough and Adams. There are no designated bike lanes off the rail trail.
