Give Chepstow one day and one night: castle, priory church and the 1816 bridge, then walk to Tintern or move on to Monmouth.

Chepstow is a small border market town on the River Wye, with a Norman castle founded in 1067, a largely intact town wall and a rail station on the Gloucester–Cardiff line. Almost everything worth seeing sits within a 15-minute walk of the castle car park. It works best as a single night or a day stop on the way to Tintern, Monmouth or Newport, not as a week-long base.

Get around

The centre is walkable: castle, museum, priory church, bridge and Town Gate are all within about 15 minutes on foot, though the walk up to the Town Gate is steep and cobbled in places. Chepstow station is about a 5-minute walk from the castle. For Tintern, the racecourse or the retail park you need a bus, a taxi or a car.

Scams and watch-outs

  • The walk from the castle up to the Town Gate is steep and cobbled; wear shoes with grip, especially after rain.
  • Riverbank paths and the Wye Valley Walk can be muddy for weeks after wet weather.
  • The National Diving & Activity Centre at Tidenham closed in 2022 and has not reopened; do not plan a trip around it.
  • Many small shops and cafés close early in the evening; eat before about 20:00 unless you have booked a pub.

A low-crime small town; the real risks are uneven cobbles, steep steps, fast tides and mud on the riverside paths. Standard UK advice applies: 999 in an emergency, 111 for NHS non-urgent.
