Chemnitz
Give Chemnitz one full day on foot for the Karl Marx head, the museums and the Kaßberg, then move on; two nights is the ceiling.
Chemnitz is Saxony's third-largest city and the least polished of the big three: a machine-industry town that was renamed Karl-Marx-Stadt from 1953 to 1990 and rebuilt after near-total wartime destruction. Its draw is exactly that mix — a 7 m bronze Marx head, New Objectivity and socialist-era buildings within a short walk of each other, and an industrial museum that explains the whole story. It is a one-day city, best used as a stop between Leipzig and Dresden or as a base for the Ore Mountains.

Get around
Trams and buses run from the Zentralhaltestelle, the cluster of platforms at Rathausstraße/Bahnhofstraße in the centre; almost every line stops there. Buy a day ticket if you make three or more rides. The centre itself is compact and walkable — Marx monument, Roter Turm, market square and the opera are all within about 15 minutes on foot.

Scams and watch-outs
- Chemnitz has no InterCity or ICE service: the Leipzig line is not electrified and the Nuremberg line only as far as Hof, so journeys take longer than the map suggests.
- Many museums close on Mondays; check each site before you build a day around it.
- The city centre empties in the evening outside the main square — plan dinner rather than wander.
- Some bars and clubs in Sonnenberg have no posted prices; ask the total before you order.
- English is less common here than in Berlin or Leipzig, especially outside the centre.
Chemnitz is a normal, safe German city by day and early evening; the centre is quiet after dark and the main risks are pickpocketing at the Zentralhaltestelle and unlit side streets in Sonnenberg. Stick to lit main roads at night.
