Chemal
Чемал
One night is enough to see the dam and Patmos Island; use it as a base for hiking in the Altai Republic, not a destination on its own.
Chemal is a small resort town on the Katun River, 100 km south of Gorno-Altaisk. It was a Soviet-era sanatorium spot and is now a recreational centre with a decommissioned hydroelectric dam, a rock island monastery and easy access to the Altai mountains. Most visitors stay one or two nights.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Scams and watch-outs
- The dam area has souvenir stalls and cafes but can be crowded in July–August.
- The suspension bridge to Patmos Island is narrow; go early to avoid queues.
- Check if the Altai Center museum is open before visiting; hours vary.
Chemal is safe for tourists. The main risks are the cold in winter, uneven paths around the dam and the suspension bridge. Carry cash; cards are not accepted everywhere.
