Chemainus

Chemainus is a small mill town on the east coast of Vancouver Island, 80 km north of Victoria and 35 km south of Nanaimo on Highway 1. It rebuilt its economy around outdoor murals and a theatre festival, so the compact centre is walkable in an afternoon. Most travellers see it as a stop on the Island highway rather than a base, and one night is enough.

Get around
The centre is small enough to walk in 20–30 minutes. BC Transit routes 6 (Duncan–Chemainus, about 50 min via Crofton) and 34 (Ladysmith–Chemainus, 21–24 min) cover the valley on weekdays, with limited weekend trips. A car is the practical way to reach trailheads, Crofton and the rest of the Cowichan Valley.
