Chelsea is a small Outaouais municipality of about 7,500 people just north of Gatineau and roughly 25–35 minutes by car from downtown Ottawa. Around 60% of its land sits inside Gatineau Park, so the village works as a trailhead-and-spa base rather than a sightseeing town. Most travellers need one night, or a single day if they drive up from Ottawa. English and French are both common here.

Get around
A car is the practical choice: sights and trailheads sit along Route 105 and Chemin de la Montagne, with little continuous pavement between them. STO buses run from Ottawa (Wellington and Bank) through Gatineau to the Cité-des-Jeunes/Plein-Air stop, but that stop is not in Chelsea, so you finish by taxi. Parking at popular Gatineau Park lots fills early on summer weekends and in fall.

- Mackenzie King Estate museums and cottages are seasonal (roughly mid-May to mid-October) and closed on some weekdays; gardens and trails stay open.
- Ticks are present in tall grass from spring to fall; check yourself after hikes.
Very safe for a rural municipality near two cities. The real risks are driving (ice, deer, dark park roads), unmarked trail junctions and cold water in Meech Lake: swim where others do, and tell someone your route.
