Use Chattogram as a one-night port-city stop on the way to the Chittagong Hill Tracts or Cox's Bazar; it is a working seaport, not a beach or heritage destination in its own right.

Chattogram, historically written Chittagong, is Bangladesh's second-largest city and home to the country's busiest container port. It sits in a narrow strip between the Chittagong Hill Tracts and the Bay of Bengal, at the mouth of the Karnaphuli river. Most visitors pass through on the way south to Cox's Bazar or east into the hill districts rather than stopping for the city itself.

Get around

Cycle rickshaws and CNG auto-rickshaws cover the city; agree the CNG fare before you get in or ask for the meter. Ride-hailing apps such as Pathao and inDrive work in the centre. Intercity trains and buses run to Dhaka (around 6 hours) and Cox's Bazar (around 4–5 hours by bus, or direct train since the 2023 rail line opened).

Language

Bangla is spoken by almost everyone; English works in hotels, upscale restaurants and business, much less on the street. Bangladeshis are curious and hospitable: expect questions and invitations.

  • 'Assalamu alaikum' (Muslims) and 'nomoskar' (Hindus) are greetings; 'dhonnobad' means thank you.
  • WhatsApp and IMO are widely used.

  • Invitations: Accept tea; bring sweets when visiting a home; avoid: Refusing all food
  • Hands: Right hand for eating and giving; avoid: Left hand for food
  • Curiosity: Expect crowds and questions; smile and answer briefly; avoid: Taking offence at stares
  • Mosques: Shoes off, head covered, visit outside prayer times; avoid: Walking in front of people praying

Scams and watch-outs

  • Travel into the Chittagong Hill Tracts (Rangamati, Khagrachari, Bandarban) can require a permit for foreigners: check current rules before you go.
  • Monsoon downpours flood low-lying streets and can delay road and rail travel.
  • CNG drivers often skip the meter and quote inflated fares to visitors: agree the price first.
  • Traffic around the port and Agrabad is heavy and slow for most of the day.
