Château-Richer
Use as a short car stop, not a base: 20–25 min by car from Québec City, so sleep in the city and see Château-Richer in an hour or two on Route 138.
Château-Richer is a village of about 3,800 people on the Côte-de-Beaupré, strung along avenue Royale and Route 138 between Québec City and Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré, facing Île d'Orléans. It is farmland, forest and a handful of heritage stops, not a town with a hotel district. Most travellers pass through by car in an hour or two; a night here only makes sense if you want a gîte, a campground or a quiet start toward Mont-Sainte-Anne and Cap Tourmente.

Get around
A car is effectively required: the village stretches several kilometres along avenue Royale and Route 138, with no useful local bus. Intercar runs Québec City (Sainte-Foy) toward Baie-Comeau daily but has no scheduled stop in Château-Richer, so plan on driving or a taxi from Québec City.

Sleep
- Avenue Royale strip
- Gîtes and B&Bs in old stone houses; walkable only in short stretches, you still need a car.
- Boulevard Sainte-Anne / Route 138
- Campgrounds and riverside lodging toward the Île d'Orléans channel; easiest for drivers.
- Outside the municipality (alternative base)
- Québec City, 20–25 min west, has far more beds, restaurants and evening options; treat it as a base outside Château-Richer, not a village sleep area.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- No scheduled intercity bus stop in the village: do not plan on arriving by coach.
- Attractions and farm stands keep short, seasonal hours; several close outside summer and fall.
- Winter driving on Route 138 and avenue Royale: expect snow and ice Dec–Mar; winter tires are required by law on Québec vehicles in that period (check).
- Cell coverage along the river strip is generally fine; coverage in the forested hills north of the village is uncertain (check).
Emergency number is 911 everywhere in Canada; 811 for non-emergency health advice. The practical concerns here are winter cold and driving conditions on Route 138 and avenue Royale — check road conditions before setting out.
